Let's start out with the absolute basics, and that is, getting started. First of all, there are 4 types of realms.
Normal Realm - Also known as PvE realms (Player vs Environment). If you are just starting, I strongly suggest you start with a normal realm, you don't want 85s one hitting you while your questing.
PvP Realm - Players from opposite factions (Alliance and Horde) are aloud to attack each other freely in most areas.
Roleplaying Servers - This kind of server is where people are supposed to stay "in character" while playing. There are more rules about the names you can pick, and the behavior in different areas. If you are going to go to a RP (Roleplay) server, I recommend checking this out http://us.blizzard.com/ support/article.xml?locale=en_ US&articleId=20458
RP-PvP - This stands for Roleplay-Player vs Player. This is the same as a roleplay server, except you may PvP people of opposite factions.
Also, you will need to know the population of the realms, when you are picking a realm, on the far right is the population.
Full - No new accounts are aloud in this server.
High - A lot of people, there will always be someone to help, but you may be waiting in a queue to log in.
Medium - A large number of people, but not too many.
New Players - This is a new server with lower overall population. If you are playing for the first time, choosing one of these realms is an excellent choice!
Offline - The grayed out servers are briefly unavailable, but should be back up soon!
Also, you should know the Geographic Tabs. When you are picking a realm, they are on the bottom of the realm selection screen, click on the tab appropriate for where you live.
Have fun, Game Hard.
